What Nocturne is
Eight pages about eight kinds of music, each with five records and one argument. No stream, no player, no presenters, no schedule. You read a page, you go and put something on.
The pages are deliberately short. A record either survives being described in one line or it does not need the line.
What Nocturne is not
It is not CROOZE.fm. That station went on air in Antwerp in 2004, spent its FM years on 104.2 there, 106.5 in Brussels and 106.4 in Ghent, moved online, moved to DAB+ under new ownership in 2022, and signed off for good on 15 May 2024. Its website and webstreams kept running until February 2026.
We bought the domain after it lapsed. We did not buy the name, the brand, the archive or the goodwill, and we are not pretending to. If you came here looking for the station, the honest answer is that it is gone and this is somebody else's page.
It is also not a revival. A group of listeners did start one — NUCROOZE, run by a Slovak non-profit, ad-free, no presenters. They say the same thing about their own independence. If you want something playing rather than something to read, go there.
Why keep the old addresses
Eight stream pages, four language roots. They are still linked from radio directories, from forum posts, from bookmark bars that have not been cleaned since 2019.
Every one of those links now lands on a page about the music that used to be behind it. That seemed better than a redirect to the front page, and much better than a 404.
How the records are chosen
By whether they still work at the hour the page is about, which is a lower bar than greatness and a higher one than taste. A few are obvious. A few are not, and the page says so.
Nobody pays for a place on these lists. Nothing here is an affiliate link. If that changes, it will be written on the page it changes, not in a policy nobody reads.
Where this comes from
Everything on this site about the station itself was read somewhere. Here is where, including the archive the eight addresses were recovered from.
- Crooze FM — English WikipediaThe founding year, the ownership, the DAB+ move and the closing date. It gives 2017 as the last FM year.
- CROOZE.fm — Dutch WikipediaThe three frequencies and the Ghent and Antwerp associations. It gives 2015 as the last FM year, which is the disagreement the FAQ mentions.
- crooze.fm in the Portuguese web archiveThe station's own site as it stood in February 2022. The eight stream addresses were read off its navigation.
- NUCROOZEThe listener-run station described in the FAQ, and its own statement that it is unconnected to the original.
The faces on the records
William Gottlieb photographed the New York clubs between 1938 and 1948 for Down Beat and the Washington Post. The Library of Congress holds the negatives; the pictures are in the public domain.
